Most of the world is known for speaking the same Genoan language, but there are some few peoples who speak their own languages. “The Peculiar Gobies” are an example of such a people; originally discovered when travelers, sailing west of the Sabotenda desert, quickly came upon an island. The people were a strange bunch, speaking an unknown tongue and eating delicacies not known anywhere else on Ostenia—such as the now famous “Goby Soup,” a broth so unique in taste that only true Gobies understand how to prepare it.
After spending time with the people of Goby Island, it was understood that, originally, they did in fact speak the universal Genoan language. They were also once Sabotendians long ago, but a land bridge led them to the island before disappearing. It left them stranded, but there was enough land and life to last them. On Goby Island, there is a dangerous breed of monster, called the “Parrock.” The Parrocks are a breed of monster—bird-like, carnivorous, and four feet in height on average—with an amazing ability to adapt. According to the Gobies, the beasts live in their “first” village, ever since they attacked it. The Gobies escaped with minimal casualties, and made a new village, called Dose; the Parrocks made the first village, Yuno, their new nest. Anyway, back to their ability to adapt. The humongous birds came upon all of the signs, writing and art of the people. With time, the Parrock’s language switched from a series of clackings to Genoan. Yes, they learned to speak Genoan.
In an effort to protect themselves, the Gobies set their new goal to learning a new language. If the Parrocks understood human speech, then they could eventually wipe out the Gobies completely. Due to fear, the Gobies learned their new language, “Gobenel,” very quickly.
Skipping forward several, several years, aforementioned travelers found Goby Island, introducing the Gobies to aquatic travel. Nowadays, Goby immigrants can be found in Desola of the Sabotenda desert. They kept their language of Gobenel, so there is still some trouble in communication, but they are slowly making themselves respectable citizens of Genoa.
